Day by Day Through Lent: Day Thirty-five

Come out!"

As "Lazarus Week" comes to a close, we remember today a man who spoke of suffering, death, and resurrection from a personal perspective. Archbishop Oscar Romero lived during the first part of the civil war that tore apart the country of El Salvador in the 1980's. Bishop Romero preached to the people of El Salvador about their hope for a new life after the ravages of war had passed. Of course, Bishop Romero did not live to see the end of the war. He was murdered while saying Mass on this date in 1980. A simple reflection from Bishop Romero, spoked many years ago the the people of El Salvador, but still ringing true for us today:

We do not only celebrate a Christ who rose without us. During Lent we are empowered to rise with Christ to a new life – to become exactly those new people need today in our country. We should not seek changes in structures simply to have new structures, because new structures are worth nothing if there are no new people to manage them and live in them.

-Bishop Oscar Romero
