Day by Day Through Lent: Day Nineteen
"Those who drink of the water I will give will never be thirsty!"
The three “pillars” of the season of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The three Lenten practices touch on the relationships that make up our lives. Prayer, of course, is directed toward God, as we try to be more attentive to the Lord’s presence in our lives. Fasting turns us inward, as we examine the changes that we need to make in ourselves so that we can become “our true selves”. Almsgiving, on the other hand, turns our attention outward, toward those who are in need. The well-known “corporal works of mercy” involve taking care of other people.
