Day by Day Through Lent: Day Thirty-nine

Holy Week

There are fewer than forty-eight hours remaining in Lent, but there is still enough time (there’s always enough time) to “get right” with the Lord. That’s a good thing to remember on Wednesday of Holy week. This day has traditionally been known as “Spy Wednesday, as the Gospel for Mass today relates the story of the actual betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot: : Biblical commentators say that thirty pieces of silver was the compensation paid to a slave owner by the owner of an ox if his beast gored a slave to death. It is also referred to in the Old Testament as “the value of a man with a price on his head,” sobering words as we reflect on what was about to happen to Jesus. Click on the image below, “The Kiss of the Betrayer,” to hear a brief reflection about the day called “Spy Wednesday.”
